What Happened At Haleiwa

The first day of the contest had the best looking waves. Aside from JJF’s obvious dominance out there, a few standouts were – Crosby Colapinto, Ian Gentil, Thiago Camaro, newly qualified Jake Marshall, Jacob Wilcox and Jack Robinson on the wave behind.

The next 2 days got big, unruly, and had a ton of water moving around. The quarters and semis both had surfers averaging under 4 waves per heat, before the final cleaned up and looked fun.

The women’s finals day still had some waves around before the wind and rain took hold for the Final. Gabriela Bryan really impressed in the quarters and semi’s. Here’s what else happened:

  1.  Surprise! John John won.

In case you didn’t know, this guy has won 4 Triple Crowns since 2011, as of last year’s internet running. If he wins this year, that’ll be 5 in 10 years. Sheesh. Here is a reminder of how good he is on the North Shore.

  1.  Bettylou Sakura Johnson wins, beating Carissa Moore and Lakey Peterson.

She also qualified for the Women’s Tour next year along with; fellow 16 year old Caitlin Simmers, Australia’s India Robinson, Costa Rican Brisa Hennessy, and Hawaiian counterparts Luana Silva & Gabriela Bryan rounding out the new class. Congrats to the qualifiers!

  1.  New 2022 CT Members

Here are the new Men’s Qualifiers;

Zeke Lau, Liam O’Brien, Connor O’Leary, Jake Marshall, Callum Robson, Samuel Pupo, Nat Young, Imaikalani deVault, Lucca Mesinas, Joao Chianca, Jackson Baker, & Carlos Munoz.

Couple of returners we’re stoked to see back. Some fresh faces we’ve been waiting to see for a while, and some names we need to familiarize ourselves with. Looks to be an interesting year for the “rookies” – and we’re all for it. See you at Pipe!
