Not even 2 days after the WSL sent out an email informing surfers about the inclusion of “wave basins” to events ranked lower than CT (Championship Tour), we have our first QS1000 announcement.
Rip Curl Pro URBNSURF QS1000 Presented by Pirate Life.
The event is set to start, and finish, on December 10th, per URBNSURF’s website. The event is not posted on the WSL’s official schedule yet.
Originally, we were unsure if only the Slater Wave Technology would be allowed in any sanctioned WSL events. The point was made clear that said technology would be the only one approved for CT competition, leaving CS, QS, Longboard, and Junior divisions up to question.
Query no more, as justification has been produced. 80 QS battlers will march upon Victoria’s wave pool in a month. And if you don’t see where this is heading, let me clue you in.
If you dont think Waco Surf, Wave Garden, and every other pool establishment is not contacting the Woz right now, you’re lost. Very soon we will see an arms race. Wave pools will be popping up quicker than flies on dog shit. Vacant land in the middle of America will be bought up in the aspiration of Rick Kane. Which technology will be able to keep pace? When will we see a Pipe-esque wave in a “wave basin”? Very soon, I say. Very soon.
Until then, we stand by for the War of Wave Pools. The Clash of Chlorine. The Battle of Basins.
Which city/wave pool gets the next WSL official contest? Stay tuned.
Cheers,
hwilsin
