You may have heard complaints about Southern California being rather gloomy for the past few months. Well it’s looking like the overcast is gone now, which means less neoprene, sunscreen, and more volume in your boards. All fine and good. There is, however, one unfavorable trait that the summer brings along with it – melted wax.
There are a couple of simple solutions to this. The obvious would be to pull up in the Bolsa Chica parking lot, as far to the south as you can, and break out your folding table. Place your board on top and change the wax before, and after your surf. The important part of this option is spending roughly double to triple more time in the parking lot than in the water.
If you don’t have the vehicle capacity or the time for option number one, you may like this next choice – buying a board sock. These are perfect for the clean car freak. Your wax is absolutely still going to melt if you leave it in the car when it gets hot, but it will be nice and contained inside that board sock rather than all over your child’s car seat. This is rumored to double as a slight ding repellent as well, however, one reddit user ‘ripplerider’ left a nice comment “they don’t do any more than the sock on your foot does to protect you from stubbing your toe.”
