SHAME

Christian Bowcutt of Stab just did a pretty rad article about the best surf section and song pairings to date. I’m not sure what the fuck he was trying to say through the first paragraph, but the idea was clear enough after reading through in its entirety. Voting from Stab premium members, plus a vague poll of a select handful of pros. Cool concept. What we ended up with is a very eclectic, trendy, hip playlist, at its core. Notably only one rap/hip hop song on the docket. What a tragedy.

Here are a few of my personal favorites they left out.

Kalani Robb in Stranger Than Fiction – Teddy Bears – Punkrocker

Dusty Payne & Julian Wilson in Swamp Duck – Gangstarr – Above The Clouds

Cole Houshmand in Smooch – Slow Jamz – Twista

Seth Moniz in Fruition – Nipsey Hussle – Hussle & Motivate

Parker Coffin in Snapt 3: Reloaded – The Smashing Pumpkins – Zero

Billabong’s Interlusion Opening Scene – Constant Mongrel – Experts In Skin

Noa Deane in Noz Vid – Sunami – Gate Crasher

Eithan Osborne in Daily Exports – FBLA – Helmet

Jack Freestone in (Low) Profile – ASAP Rocky – r Cali

It’s a shame that surfing is too cool for hip hop and rap. I think it pairs pretty damn well. And I see a lot of instagram reels featuring the same. Only a matter of time until the culture is more comfortable with it.

Share some of your favorite surf song & section pairings. I’d like to add to this list.

Cheers,
